These new ‘floating’ apartment buildings, designed by award-winning architect David Chipperfield, are designed to appear like they are floating.

The Xixi apartments are constructed of stone-plinths to create a fortress-like appearance, in stark contrast to the natural wetlands surrounding them. The apartment structure encompasses 127,000 square feet, and is set on a preserved national wetland, which just adds to the dreamy quality.

I don’t know how I feel about building housing on national wetlands, but I will say that if you are going to do it, designing it to fit in the way the Xixi apartments do is much less offensive than mowing it all down in favor of landscaping and development.
