I have lived in Manhattan for 6 years, so I know without a doubt how expensive it can truly be. Still, for the first five years I had an amazing apartment that I considered a really good deal. For $1,000 (my share of a 3 bedroom), we had a three bedroom apartment with a Jacuzzi tub, huge bathroom, washer dryer in unit, dishwasher, AND central heat/air. Ask anyone who lives in Manhattan and they will tell you how rare that is.
